Adeleke Wins Osun Governorship Election, Secures Second Term
Share post

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has won the Osun governorship election, securing a second four-year term after defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The result was announced early Sunday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Collation Centre in Osogbo by the Returning Officer for the election, Joshua Ogunwole.

Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes to emerge victorious.

Oyebamiji, the APC candidate, finished second with 444,815 votes, while Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Declaring the result, Ogunwole said Adeleke had satisfied the requirements of the law and was therefore returned elected as governor of Osun State.

The Returning Officer said a total of 1,005,800 votes were cast across the 30 local government areas of the state. Of the votes cast, 985,079 were valid, while 1,010,684 voters were accredited for the election.

The victory marks another milestone in Adeleke’s political career, particularly because he contested the 2026 election under the Accord Party after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he won his first term as governor.

Adeleke announced his defection from the PDP in December, explaining that the Accord Party’s philosophy was closely aligned with his administration’s focus on the welfare of citizens and workers.

“We opted for the Accord Party because its mission of welfarism aligns with our passionate focus on citizens’ and workers’ welfare,” Adeleke said at the time.

He added that the welfare and well-being of the people remained the primary purpose of government.

The result means Adeleke will remain in office for another four years, giving him an opportunity to consolidate the policies and programmes of his first administration.

His victory also represents a significant setback for the APC, which had sought to reclaim the Osun governorship through Oyebamiji.

The closely contested margin between the two leading candidates underscores the competitive nature of the election, with Adeleke finishing 66,252 votes ahead of his APC challenger.

The outcome is expected to shape the political landscape in Osun State as the governor begins preparations for his second term.
