Africa’s richest man and Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has said he is confident that one of his three daughters could eventually take charge of the conglomerate.
Dangote made the disclosure during an interview with ARISE News on Tuesday while discussing the future of his business empire and his approach to succession.
According to the billionaire businessman, his daughters have demonstrated sufficient interest and ability to take on greater responsibilities within the company.
Asked whether he could envisage one of them becoming the head of the Dangote Group, he replied, “I think, yes, I can see one of them.”
Dangote said he had been observing all three daughters and believed any of them had the potential to lead the company.
Dangote’s three daughters — Halima, Fatima and Mariya — already occupy senior positions within the business empire.
Their responsibilities have continued to expand as the conglomerate develops its long-term succession and governance structure.
The billionaire said their involvement in the family business was not the result of parental pressure.
Rather, he said, the three women had shown genuine interest in the business and enjoyed participating in its activities.
“They are very, very interested in the business. I’m not forcing them to come and be part of this business, no. They are very interested, and they enjoy it,” Dangote said.
Dangote also expressed confidence that his daughters could achieve even more than he has accomplished in building the Dangote Group.
He pointed to their education and potential for innovation as reasons he believes they could take the conglomerate into a new phase.
“One of them can be better than — I never expected to perform this much,” he said.
He added that their education could help them introduce fresh ideas and potentially take the company to a higher level.
“So most likely, they might be even taking the company to the next level,” Dangote said.
When asked whether he believed all three daughters had the capacity to achieve this, he answered: “All of them.”
Despite traditional expectations surrounding male succession in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly Kano, Dangote said having a son to inherit his business was not a major concern for him.
He argued that having a male child does not automatically guarantee the preservation or success of a family’s legacy.
“Sometimes you can pray for God to give you a son, but that son might be the one to bring down the name of the family,” he said.
Dangote said people should not force circumstances when they do not receive what they initially hoped for.
“Sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push,” he added.
He maintained that he did not believe a son would necessarily have performed better than his daughters.
“I don’t think a son would have done something better than these three daughters that I have. That one, I think, you know, it’s not my priority,” Dangote said.
Beyond the question of whether a family member will eventually lead the company, Dangote said his bigger concern was establishing a strong professional governance structure.
He said the long-term survival of the Dangote Group should not depend solely on family ownership or succession.
“I want this company to be run professionally. I want to have the highest level of governance,” he said.
Dangote pointed to multinational companies such as Microsoft and Apple as examples of businesses that have continued to grow and operate beyond the direct leadership of their founders.
He said his succession strategy would therefore seek to protect the company from poor management, including the possibility of a family member damaging the business.
“We want to make sure that we make it very difficult for any family member to come and destroy anything,” Dangote said.
For Dangote, the ultimate goal extends beyond transferring his wealth or business empire to his children.

The businessman said he wants his lasting legacy to be his contribution to the industrial development of Africa.
“What I want to leave as a legacy is to industrialise Africa,” he said.
Dangote acknowledged that such an ambition could not be achieved by one person alone.
He expressed optimism that more African entrepreneurs and business leaders would contribute to the continent’s industrialisation in the coming years.
“I cannot do it alone, but I’m 100% sure that in the next two or three years, other Africans will join,” he said.
