The Nigerian Army has announced a major shake-up in its senior leadership structure, redeploying several major generals and brigadier generals to strategic command, operational and administrative positions.
The postings were approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and position experienced officers to respond to Nigeria’s changing security challenges.
According to the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the exercise focused particularly on key operational theatres and strategic appointments.
She said the objective was to ensure that the “right leadership, experience and expertise” were deployed to areas requiring decisive action.
Under the new arrangement, Major General IA Ajose has been redeployed from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to the Theatre Command, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI.
Ajose will serve as the new Theatre Commander, taking charge of the Army’s operations within the theatre.
His appointment comes as the military continues efforts to strengthen its operational response to security threats in the North-East.
Several other senior officers have also received new assignments across the Nigerian Army.
Major General AE Abubakar, who previously served under Operation HADIN KAI, has been posted to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research.
Major General AM Alechenu has moved from Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
Major General RT Utsaha has also been redeployed from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to Defence Headquarters Garrison, where he will serve as Commander.
Major General AM Umar has been moved from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs to the Army War College Nigeria as Commandant.
His position at the Department of Civil-Military Affairs will be taken over by Major General UM Alkali, who has been redeployed from the Army War College.
The postings are part of the broader restructuring of the Army’s senior command and staff appointments.
Major General GS Muhammed has been redeployed from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director General.
His predecessor at the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, Major General JE Osifo, has been moved to the Military Pension Board as Chairman.
Meanwhile, Major General IE Ekpenyong has been posted to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director, Engineering Services.
The reshuffle also affected several brigadier generals serving in operational and support formations.
Brigadier General AA Bello has moved from 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.
Brigadier General MS Adamu has been redeployed from the Nigerian Army Women Command to the newly established 8 Brigade, where he will serve as Commander.
Brigadier General MS Sule has moved from Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to 27 Task Force Brigade as Commander.
Brigadier General I Sule has been moved from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to 6 Division Garrison as Commander.
Brigadier General E Azenda has also been redeployed from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to 2 Division Garrison as Commander.
In a corresponding move, Brigadier General AS Bugaje has been transferred from 2 Division Garrison to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director, Administration.
Following the appointments, the Chief of Army Staff charged the newly deployed officers to justify the confidence placed in them.
Shaibu urged the officers to demonstrate exemplary leadership, operational innovation and professionalism, while remaining committed to their responsibilities.
He reminded them of the Army’s constitutional mandate to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty, protect its territorial integrity and support civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.

The Nigerian Army said the reshuffle was designed to maintain a flexible leadership and force-employment structure capable of producing better operational outcomes.
The Service said the new appointments would also strengthen cooperation between the military and other security agencies.
According to the Army, the redeployments are expected to improve its ability to respond effectively to both existing and emerging security threats in line with Nigeria’s national security objectives.
The Nigerian Army’s latest leadership reshuffle has placed experienced senior officers in key operational and strategic positions, including Major General IA Ajose as the new Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI.
The Service said the changes are aimed at improving command effectiveness, strengthening inter-agency coordination and enhancing the military’s response to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
