The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has presented cheques worth N2.48 million to families of deceased police officers and personnel injured in the line of duty.
The cheques, valued at N2,483,354.01, were presented on Tuesday on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The payment was made under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
The beneficiaries included families of police officers who lost their lives while performing their constitutional duties, as well as serving personnel who sustained injuries during service.
The disbursement also covered outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements.
The latest payment forms part of welfare interventions aimed at providing financial support to police personnel and families affected by the risks associated with police duties.
Speaking during the presentation, Adewale said the exercise was more than the payment of financial benefits, describing it as a demonstration of the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force to the welfare of its personnel.
The Commissioner said the intervention was also intended to support families of officers who died while serving the country.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” Adewale said.
He assured the injured officers and bereaved families that they were not alone in dealing with the consequences of police service.
According to him, no amount of financial compensation could replace a lost loved one or completely erase the pain caused by an injury.

However, he said the payment would provide practical assistance to affected families and personnel.
The Bayelsa CP said the welfare intervention also reaffirmed that the sacrifices and contributions of police officers were recognised and valued by the Force.
He urged personnel to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities while assuring them that welfare interventions would continue to support officers and families affected by the demands and risks of police service.
Adewale added that the Bayelsa State Police Command would continue to support initiatives focused on improving the welfare of police personnel and families affected by service-related challenges.
