I’m Old Enough to Decide Who I Marry, We’re Past the Era of Parents Choosing Partners— Singer Mayorkun
Nigerian singer Mayorkun has said he is old enough to make his own decisions about who he wants to spend the rest of his life with, adding that parents should not dictate who their children marry.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Uncut Podcast, the singer said he would do his best to get his mother to understand his choice of partner but would not allow her to make the decision for him.
“I think I’m old enough to make my decisions when it comes to who I spend my life with. I mean, I will try my best to let my mom see the something, but I think we are past that era of maybe your parents telling you who
to marry. That time has passed. I no dey for that one,” he said.
Mayorkun also questioned the idea of parents opposing their children’s choice of partner because of religious differences, arguing that people should be free to marry whoever they love.
“it’s like saying, ‘Oh, my kid cannot marry somebody that is Muslim.’ Bro, this is not 1800, this is not BC. There’s no civil w@r going on. I can get married to a Somalian if that’s who I like,” he said.
The singer added that he believes his mother would be accepting of his choice, saying, “And my mom that I know, she will like that Somalian.”
