The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has fixed Saturday, September 26, 2026, for the conduct of local government elections across the state.
The commission’s Chairman, Chief Charles Ejiogu, announced the date in a statement dated September 11, 2026.
The notice was directed to key stakeholders, including registered political parties and members of the public, ahead of the polls.
According to Ejiogu, the election will determine occupants of the 27 local government council chairmanship positions in Imo State.
The polls will also cover ward councillorship positions across the state’s local government areas.
The commission said voting will take place across 4,758 polling units during the September 26 exercise.
ISIEC urged all registered political parties participating in the election to take note of the announced date and make the necessary preparations.
The commission’s latest notice is intended to provide clarity for political parties, candidates and other stakeholders as preparations for the local government polls continue.
Ejiogu called on the relevant parties to take the necessary steps ahead of election day.
The ISIEC chairman also referenced the commission’s earlier 360-day notice of election, issued on September 18, 2025.

He said the earlier notice was issued pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
The latest statement, therefore, serves as a further notification to political parties and the wider public regarding the date fixed for the local government elections.
With the election date now announced, political parties and candidates are expected to intensify preparations for the September 26 contest.
The exercise will determine the next set of local government chairmen and ward councillors across Imo State, making it a significant electoral event at the grassroots level.
