The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Professor Patrick Muoboghare, says the Delta Unity Group(DUG), has moved from being largely non-partisan to becoming more partisan in its bid to adequately represent the interests of Deltans.

Muoboghare stated this while speaking on DOTT TV’s Morning Dew programme, during the Political Talk segment, where he discussed the group’s role in Delta State and Nigerian politics.

He said the failure of the group’s preferred candidate to win an election in 2023 does not mean its members should withdraw from political participation, stressing that DUG remains focused on examining the political situation in Delta State.

Muoboghare said DUG members are committed to what he described as the interests and aspirations of the people of Delta State, adding that the group considers the welfare of Deltans in its political engagements.

Explaining the group’s shift from its previous largely non-partisan position, he said active participation in politics requires belonging to a political party, hence the decision by members to become more partisan in order to pursue their stated objectives.

On the group’s changing perception of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Muoboghare said the removal of fuel subsidy was among the factors that influenced DUG’s assessment of the Tinubu administration.

He said the announcement of the subsidy removal during President Tinubu’s inauguration changed the group’s perception, arguing that the policy was necessary for the economy despite the hardship associated with it.

On criticism of the President over his academic qualifications and the controversy surrounding his educational records, Muoboghare dismissed the issue as a distraction, saying he was pleased that President Tinubu had not allowed such issues to divert attention from governance.

He cited the administration’s policies, including fuel subsidy removal and increased allocations to the states, as examples of measures he believes have created an enabling environment for Nigerians.

Muoboghare also linked DUG’s vision for a greater Delta to national politics, saying the group seeks greater educational and economic opportunities for Deltans.

He argued that the group considers Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and President Tinubu capable of supporting the realisation of these objectives, based on what he described as the achievements of their respective administrations.

Speaking on his new responsibility in the university system, Professor Muoboghare said sustainable funding remains critical to the future of tertiary institutions in Delta State.

He called for the diversification of funding sources, stressing that universities must develop independent sources of income to remain sustainable.

Muoboghare said he is prepared to work towards achieving the objectives of moving Dennis Osadebay University and the wider university system forward.
