The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University Chapter (ASUUPLASU), has commenced a total and indefinite strike over unresolved pension, wage and other welfare-related demands.

The union announced the industrial action after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11, 2026.

At its Congress meeting on August 25, ASUUPLASU reviewed the response from the university administration and resolved that none of its six major demands had been satisfactorily addressed.

In a statement signed by the union’s Chairperson, Dr Vincent Dung Choji, and Secretary, Comrade Lomka K. Iliya, ASUUPLASU said the response contained in a letter dated August 18 failed to address the substance of its concerns.

Among the union’s demands is the immediate commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for staff of the institution.

The union is also demanding the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/ASUU Agreement, including the payment of applicable arrears from January 2026.

Other demands include the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence to improve security.

ASUUPLASU also called for an end to what it described as the intimidation of union leaders by the university administration.

The union is further demanding the payment of 22 months’ outstanding arrears relating to the 25% and 35% wage award.

According to ASUUPLASU, the arrears have remained unpaid despite several engagements and attempts to resolve the matter with the university management.

With the approval of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Congress directed all members to withdraw from teaching, research and other academic activities until further notice.

The union said the decision to embark on the indefinite strike was taken after exhausting available avenues for an amicable resolution of the issues.

ASUUPLASU appealed to its members, students, parents and other stakeholders to understand the reasons behind the industrial action.

The union maintained that the strike became necessary because of what it described as the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily address the longstanding demands.

Academic activities at Plateau State University are expected to remain suspended until the union and the university management reach an agreement on the issues in dispute.
