The United States will head into one of the biggest matches in the country’s football history with leading striker Folarin Balogun available after FIFA dramatically suspended his one-match ban, setting the stage for a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium on Monday.

Balogun, who has scored three goals during the tournament, was initially ruled out after receiving a straight red card in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32.

The striker was dismissed following a video review after appearing to step on the foot of a Bosnia-Herzegovina defender. Under FIFA regulations, a straight red card normally carries an automatic one-match suspension.

However, in an extraordinary development on Sunday, FIFA announced that the suspension would instead be deferred for one year, making Balogun immediately eligible to face Belgium. The governing body did not publicly explain the reasoning behind the decision.

According to AFP, two sources familiar with the matter said US President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request that Balogun’s punishment be reviewed.

Trump later celebrated the decision on his Truth Social platform.

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” he wrote.

US Camp Welcomes Decision

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed FIFA’s ruling, describing it as a fair outcome ahead of one of the country’s most important World Cup fixtures.

The availability of Balogun is viewed as a major boost for the Americans, who are hoping to reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2002.

Playing in front of home supporters has helped fuel optimism around the national team, with expectations rising significantly following an impressive start to the tournament.

Balogun has been central to that success, contributing three goals and emerging as one of the competition’s standout performers for the co-host nation.

Belgium Reacts with Surprise

While the decision was welcomed in the American camp, it provoked an immediate backlash from Belgium.

The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was “astonished” by FIFA’s decision and confirmed it was examining every possible option available.

The controversy has also drawn reactions from other national teams still competing in the tournament.

England manager Thomas Tuchel questioned where FIFA should draw the line regarding disciplinary appeals after one of his own players received a red card during England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico.

“Where does this start and end now? Can we overturn it?” Tuchel asked reporters.

“Where to draw the line is the question I ask. Where does this end now? It’s my question, I don’t have an answer.”

The incident has intensified debate over consistency in disciplinary decisions during major international tournaments.

Historic Opportunity for the United States

The stakes could hardly be higher for the United States.

Having progressed confidently into the knockout rounds, Mauricio Pochettino’s side now have an opportunity to equal one of the nation’s best-ever World Cup performances.

The Americans have not reached the quarter-finals since the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and victory over Belgium would represent another landmark achievement in a tournament already generating unprecedented excitement among supporters.

With Balogun restored to the squad, the hosts will hope their leading scorer can continue the form that has made him one of the tournament’s most dangerous forwards.

Belgium, meanwhile, will seek to block the American momentum and spoil what promises to be a passionate home occasion in Seattle.

Spain Meet Portugal in Iberian Showdown

Monday’s other Round of 16 fixture will see European champions Spain face neighbours Portugal in Dallas for a place in the quarter-finals.

Much of the spotlight remains on Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who responded defiantly to criticism surrounding his performances and future.

The 41-year-old acknowledged he is no longer at the peak of his career but insisted he continues to make a valuable contribution to the national team.

“I am not doing too bad,” Ronaldo said after scoring three goals so far in the tournament, including two against Uzbekistan during the group stage and another from the penalty spot in Portugal’s victory over Croatia in the Round of 32.

Reflecting on years of scrutiny, Ronaldo added:

“It’s been like this since I was 18, it is not going to change.”

“I always put body and soul trying to get our goals — playing or not playing, I will always have an important role to play.”

Spain, meanwhile, appear to have found their rhythm after a slow start to the competition.

Their convincing 3-0 victory over Austria in the previous round has restored confidence, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is expected to play a leading role.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente believes the 18-year-old thrives under pressure.

“He loves these kinds of games,” de la Fuente said.

“He likes to be the focus, he likes the responsibility, he likes to take the initiative.”

England Await Norway

Elsewhere, England have already booked their place in the quarter-finals after edging Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic encounter at the Azteca Stadium.

They will next face Norway after Erling Haaland inspired the Scandinavian side to a memorable 2-1 victory over Brazil, scoring both goals to eliminate the South American giants.

The quarter-final meeting between England and Norway is scheduled for next Saturday as the race for the FIFA World Cup title continues.
