The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly condemned recent incidents of xenophobia in South Africa, calling on authorities and communities to uphold the rights, dignity, and safety of migrants living in the country.
The WHO chief expressed concern over reports of discrimination, intimidation, and violence targeting foreign nationals, warning that such actions threaten social cohesion, public health, and human rights.
According to the global health body, migrants play important roles in society and should not be subjected to hostility or exclusion based on their nationality, ethnicity, or immigration status.
The Director-General emphasized that access to healthcare, protection, and essential services should be guaranteed for everyone, regardless of where they come from. He noted that fear and discrimination can discourage vulnerable populations from seeking medical assistance, creating broader public health risks for entire communities.
The WHO further urged governments, civil society organizations, and community leaders to work together to promote tolerance, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns over recurring incidents of anti-immigrant sentiment in parts of South Africa, where foreign nationals have occasionally faced attacks, threats, and accusations related to employment, crime, and access to public services.
Human rights advocates have repeatedly called for stronger measures to protect migrants and refugees while addressing the social and economic challenges that often fuel tensions within communities.
The WHO stressed that combating xenophobia requires collective action and a commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of all people, regardless of their background.
Observers say the statement highlights the increasing global concern over the treatment of migrants and the importance of fostering inclusive societies built on respect, diversity, and mutual understanding.
