Remi Tinubu Emerges As Key Figure In Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign
Share post

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is increasingly emerging as a prominent figure in President Bola Tinubu’s preparations for the 2027 general election, with supporters pointing to her expanding grassroots engagement and empowerment initiatives as evidence of her growing political influence.

The position was highlighted by the National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Convener of the Mummy’s Men Movement, Dayo Israel, who said political campaigns often rely not only on candidates but also on influential figures working behind the scenes to strengthen support.

According to him, Senator Tinubu has evolved beyond the traditional ceremonial role associated with the office of the First Lady, taking on responsibilities that combine public engagement with programmes targeted at women, youths and underserved communities.

Before becoming First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu had already built an extensive political career, serving as a senator and playing active roles within Nigeria’s political landscape. Since assuming her current office, she has continued to champion initiatives focused on education, healthcare, women’s empowerment and social welfare while maintaining a visible presence at political and community events across the country.

Supporters argue that her style differs from that of some former international first ladies. While former US First Lady Michelle Obama pursued a broad public advocacy agenda and Melania Trump maintained a more selective public profile during Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, Senator Tinubu has adopted a highly visible approach by travelling across Nigeria and engaging directly with various groups.

Her public visibility, however, has also attracted criticism, with some of her comments generating political debate and attracting differing interpretations. Despite the scrutiny, she has continued to participate actively in public programmes.

Advocates say her continued engagement demonstrates resilience and commitment to public service despite the intense attention that comes with her office.

One of the most notable aspects of her recent activities has been the emphasis on practical support for party structures and grassroots mobilisation.

In June 2026, the First Lady announced the donation of vehicles to APC women leaders in Abia, Anambra, Bauchi, Osun and Oyo states, particularly in states where the party is not in control of the governorship. Supporters say the initiative is intended to strengthen grassroots mobilisation by improving the ability of party leaders to reach communities and coordinate political activities.

She also presented nine buses to the APC National Youth Wing to enhance mobility for youth organisers across the country. Party officials described the buses as more than transportation, saying they would improve coordination, outreach and engagement with supporters nationwide.

Beyond political mobilisation, Senator Tinubu has continued to promote programmes focused on women’s development. In May 2026, she launched INSPIRE—the Inclusive Network for Supporting Progressive Leadership, Innovation, Reform and Equity for Women—to encourage leadership development, inclusion and professional advancement for women in Nigeria’s Federal Civil Service.

Supporters believe such initiatives reflect an emphasis on empowering others and building long-term institutional capacity.

The emergence of the Mummy’s Men Movement, led by APC National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, is also being presented as an effort to encourage supporters inspired by the First Lady’s activities to translate that admiration into grassroots political action as preparations gradually gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
