A Federal High Court has ordered the deregistration of five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Accord Party, in a ruling that could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections.

The court’s decision followed legal proceedings challenging the continued registration of the affected parties, with the judge directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take the necessary steps in compliance with the judgment.

In addition to the ADC and Accord Party, three other political parties were also affected by the ruling. The court held that the parties failed to meet certain constitutional and electoral requirements necessary for maintaining their status as registered political organisations.

The judgment is expected to generate reactions from political stakeholders, particularly as preparations for future elections continue across the country.

Legal analysts say the ruling could have implications for politicians currently aligned with the affected parties, especially those seeking elective positions under their platforms.

The ADC has recently gained national attention following the movement of several prominent political figures into the party as discussions around coalition politics and the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.

Political observers note that the judgment may trigger appeals and further legal action, as affected parties are expected to challenge the decision in higher courts.

The Independent National Electoral Commission is yet to issue an official statement outlining the next steps regarding the implementation of the court’s directive.

Stakeholders within the affected parties are also expected to review the judgment and determine their legal and political options moving forward.

The development comes at a time when Nigeria’s political environment is witnessing increased realignments, coalition talks, and preparations ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Further updates are expected as the parties and electoral authorities respond to the court’s ruling.
