Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, has revealed that bandits behind the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State threatened to kill the victims if security forces attempted a rescue operation.
Musa said the kidnappers are allegedly using the abducted children and teachers as bargaining tools, demanding the release of some of their commanders currently held by the military.
According to the minister, security agencies had considered moving against the criminals but had to proceed carefully after receiving threats that the hostages would be executed if troops advanced.
The victims were abducted on May 15 from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and two other schools in Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, with families and authorities continuing to call for the safe return of the missing pupils and teachers.
Security agencies are currently working to secure the release of the victims while avoiding actions that could put their lives at greater risk.

Musa also renewed his support for stronger penalties against kidnappers and bandits, including the death penalty for those convicted of severe violent crimes.
He argued that weak punishments have encouraged criminal groups to continue carrying out attacks and that tougher consequences could serve as a stronger deterrent.
The Defence Minister stressed that a firm approach is needed to tackle Nigeria’s growing security challenges and protect citizens from criminal activities.
The safe return of the abducted Oyo pupils and teachers remains a priority as security agencies continue efforts to resolve the situation.
