The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that it plans to introduce new taxes on telecommunications services and petroleum products, assuring Nigerians that no such measures are currently under consideration.

The clarification followed media reports referencing recommendations by the International Monetary Fund, IMF, which suggested that Nigeria could expand its tax base by extending Value Added Tax, VAT, to fuel products and introducing excise duties on telecommunications services.

Responding to the reports, government officials stated that the recommendations were merely advisory and do not represent government policy or approved fiscal measures.

According to the Federal Government, there are currently no plans to impose additional taxes on telecom services or fuel, stressing that any future tax reforms would undergo extensive consultations with stakeholders and be communicated through appropriate official channels.

The government reiterated its commitment to implementing tax policies that promote economic growth, encourage investment, and protect citizens from unnecessary financial burdens.

Officials also emphasized that the administration remains focused on improving revenue generation through broader tax compliance, economic expansion, and the effective implementation of existing tax laws rather than introducing measures that could further increase the cost of living.

The clarification comes amid growing public concern over inflation, rising fuel costs, and increasing pressure on household incomes following a series of economic reforms implemented in recent years.

Analysts note that any move to tax fuel products or telecommunications services could have significant implications for transportation costs, business operations, digital services, and consumer spending across the country.

The Federal Government, however, assured Nigerians that reports of new taxes on fuel and telecom services are inaccurate and should be disregarded.

Authorities further urged members of the public to rely on official government communications for information regarding tax policies and economic reforms.

The development follows ongoing discussions about Nigeria’s revenue generation strategy and efforts to strengthen public finances while balancing economic growth and social welfare considerations.
