The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed three alcohol manufacturing companies in Ota, Ogun State, over alleged violations of the Federal Government’s ban on the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

The enforcement operation, carried out by officials of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, was led by Assistant Director, Kunle Ojo, as part of the agency’s nationwide crackdown on manufacturers flouting regulatory directives aimed at protecting public health.

According to a statement issued by the agency, several regulatory violations were uncovered during inspections of the affected factories.

At the first facility, which NAFDAC did not identify, inspectors reportedly found sachet alcoholic drinks still being produced alongside large quantities of PET bottles. The factory was initially placed under regulatory hold. However, during a follow-up inspection, officials discovered that the sachet alcohol products previously placed under enforcement had allegedly been removed from the premises without authorization.

NAFDAC described the removal of the products as a serious breach of regulatory procedures, noting that the items had already been placed under official enforcement measures.

At the second company, also unnamed, the enforcement team allegedly caught the manufacturer continuing the production of sachet alcoholic beverages despite the government’s prohibition. The agency immediately sealed the premises to prevent further production.

The third factory had earlier been inspected in January, when NAFDAC placed 22 production machines under regulatory hold and confiscated millions of PET bottles and sachet packaging materials intended for destruction.

During the latest inspection, officials allegedly discovered that the factory had broken the agency’s official seals, reactivated the production machines, and resumed manufacturing banned sachet alcoholic drinks. Millions of additional PET bottles were also found at the facility, prompting NAFDAC to immediately seal the factory.

Speaking on the operation, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to strict enforcement of the nationwide ban on sachet alcoholic beverages.

NAFDAC stated that the operation demonstrates its zero-tolerance approach to regulatory violations and its determination to ensure full compliance with the government’s directive aimed at safeguarding public health.

The agency also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal production, distribution, or sale of banned sachet alcoholic drinks to the nearest NAFDAC office for prompt enforcement action.
