The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as interim manager of the Super Falcons ahead of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
Eguavoen will lead the women’s national team in their two-legged second-round qualifier against Comoros in October.
The appointment represents a new chapter in Eguavoen’s managerial career, as it will be his first assignment as head coach of a Nigerian women’s national team.
Eguavoen will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, the head coach of Nasarawa Amazons.
The technical crew will also include former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf and former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa.
The team will be tasked with guiding Nigeria through the early stages of the Olympic qualifying series as the Falcons seek to secure a place at the 2028 Games.
Nigeria will begin its Olympic qualifying campaign in the second round against Comoros, with both legs scheduled to take place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.
The first leg is slated for October 9, while the return fixture will be played on October 13.
Nigeria earned a bye into the second round after being ranked among the highest-rated teams in the qualifying series.
Comoros, on the other hand, advanced after recording a remarkable 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.
The Super Falcons must overcome four rounds of two-legged knockout fixtures to secure one of Africa’s two available places in the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games.
A successful outcome against Comoros would send Nigeria into the third qualifying round, scheduled for early 2027.
The Falcons would then face either DR Congo or Morocco in the next stage.
Eguavoen’s appointment comes weeks after Justine Madugu was removed as Super Falcons head coach alongside his technical crew.
The decision followed Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending the country’s record of appearing at every edition of the tournament since its inauguration in 1991.
Eguavoen, who has previously handled the Super Eagles, will now have the responsibility of guiding the Falcons through a crucial Olympic qualification campaign.
