The Borno State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, has apologised and withdrawn his controversial remarks threatening to “flog” opposition supporters who refuse to back the All Progressives Congress.

Buba made the controversial comments in a video that circulated widely, where he appeared to warn political opponents against challenging the ruling party.

He had said that those who supported the government would enjoy “the honey,” while those who refused to align with it would face punishment.

In his subsequent statement, Buba said he had previously attempted to clarify the remarks, insisting that they were not intended to be interpreted literally.

However, he acknowledged that the comments had continued to generate concern among members of the public.

He therefore formally retracted the statement and apologised to the people of Borno State and others who may have been offended by his words.

“In view of the concern it has continued to generate, I am using this medium to retract my earlier statement formally and to apologise to the entire people of Borno State and beyond for any offence it may have caused.”

The commissioner also stressed that his statement should not be regarded as reflecting the position of the APC or the administration of Governor Babagana Zulum.

He said the controversial comment was inconsistent with the principles and values of both the ruling party and the state government.

“My comment does not in any way represent the ideals of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the administration of His Excellency, Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.”

Buba maintained that the government respects the rights of citizens and does not seek to undermine their freedoms.

According to the commissioner, the APC and the Zulum administration remain committed to recognising and respecting different sections of society.

He particularly highlighted young people, describing them as strong supporters of both the party and the governor’s administration.

Buba said the government’s relationship with the people was built around respect and inclusion rather than intimidation.

The commissioner further defended Governor Zulum and the APC, saying they had demonstrated commitment to democratic principles during the past seven years.

He assured residents that the administration would maintain that position until the end of Zulum’s tenure.

The apology comes after Buba’s remarks sparked public concern over the tone of political rhetoric in the state, particularly comments perceived as threatening opposition supporters.
