2027: Iyabo Obasanjo Resigns From APC, Alleges Disrespect by Party Leadership

Former Senator representing Ogun Central and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, citing what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment by the party’s leadership in Ogun State.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Ogun State Chairman of the APC, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Prof. Obasanjo said her decision followed a series of experiences that left her feeling sidelined despite her contributions to the growth of the party in the state.

The former lawmaker, who recently contested for the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections, expressed dissatisfaction with the consensus process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola as the party’s governorship candidate.

According to her, while she had publicly committed to supporting any consensus decision reached by the party, the leadership failed to adequately consult her before announcing Senator Adeola as the preferred candidate.

She argued that the process did not align with the party’s established guidelines, which require consultations and agreements among aspirants before a consensus candidate is adopted.

Prof. Obasanjo further alleged that some of her supporters were prevented from accessing the venue where the announcement was made, an incident she described as troubling and disappointing.

Despite her concerns, she said she chose to place party unity above personal interests and immediately congratulated the candidate while pledging her support for the party’s gubernatorial ambition in the state.

According to the former senator, Senator Adeola later reached out to appreciate her support and subsequently met with her and members of her political team. During the meeting, her supporters reportedly presented several requests and concerns, with the expectation that the candidate would respond within a week.

However, she claimed that more than two months later, no response had been received, reinforcing what she described as a pattern of disregard toward her and her supporters.

In the letter, Obasanjo stated that the treatment she received throughout her time in the APC convinced her that she was no longer valued within the party structure.

She noted that when an environment becomes defined by persistent disrespect, the appropriate response is to move on, adding that her resignation marked the end of her association with the ruling party.

Despite her departure, the former Ogun State Commissioner for Health expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun APC leadership, and other party officials whom she said treated her with courtesy during her stay in the party.

Prof. Obasanjo formally joined the APC earlier this year after returning to active partisan politics. Her political comeback generated significant attention following the appearance of campaign billboards across Ogun State, fueling speculation about her governorship ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers say her resignation could add a new dimension to the evolving political landscape in Ogun State as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
