The Nigerian Air Force has intensified efforts to assist in the rescue of teachers and pupils abducted from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State by deploying aerial surveillance assets to support ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed the development during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff and senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force, where he commended the military for its swift response following the abduction.

According to the governor, intelligence gathered through the surveillance missions has continued to provide valuable support to security agencies, helping them monitor developments and coordinate rescue efforts aimed at securing the safe return of the victims.

Makinde appealed to residents to remain patient and continue supporting security agencies, assuring them that every available resource is being deployed to bring the kidnapped teachers and pupils back safely.

The governor also revealed that the Nigerian Air Force immediately deployed an aerial surveillance platform after the incident was reported, providing critical intelligence that has strengthened ongoing operations on the ground.

He praised the Air Force for making the aircraft available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial security assets are still undergoing final assembly and preparations at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Lagos.

According to Makinde, the state government procured the platforms following consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to maintenance support, engineering expertise, and pilot training. He expressed confidence that the aircraft would significantly improve security operations across Oyo State and neighboring states once fully operational.

Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at rescuing the abducted victims. He assured the state government that the Air Force would continue working closely with other security agencies to address security challenges and protect lives and property.

The victims were abducted on May 15 during an attack on Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele, and L.A. Primary School in the affected communities. The attack resulted in the kidnapping of several teachers and pupils, while one teacher was reportedly killed in captivity.

The incident triggered nationwide concern, with teachers’ unions, civil society groups, and community leaders demanding urgent action to secure the release of the victims.

Last week, the House of Representatives called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted teachers and students. In response to the growing security concerns, President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and authorized the deployment of a special rescue team to strengthen operations in the area.

Authorities say surveillance and rescue operations remain ongoing as security agencies continue efforts to secure the safe return of the victims and restore confidence among affected communities.
