Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has acknowledged that Spain deserved to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his side suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

“When you give everything like that, regardless of whether you play well or poorly, it’s very hard to find fault.”
Scaloni also stressed the importance of accepting defeat with the same humility Argentina had shown during its recent successes.
The 48-year-old has overseen one of the most successful periods in Argentina’s football history, guiding the team to Copa América glory, the 2022 FIFA World Cup title and another appearance in the sport’s biggest final.
Reflecting on Sunday’s defeat, he urged his players and supporters to remain proud of their achievements.
“We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat. Today, we are showing that we know how to lose,” Scaloni said.
“We lost the match and we accept it, but that doesn’t mean we stop living or forget everything we did to get here.”

“We have to pick ourselves up again, there is no other way,” he added.
